Wheelchair-accessible taxis

Two local operators mark themselves as accessible, though on request rather than as a standing part of the fleet:

• Say you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle when you book, not when the car turns up — "on request" means the firm needs the notice to actually arrange it.
• For anything time-sensitive, like meeting a train, book the day before if you can.
• If it's a large or powered wheelchair, mention the size and whether it folds — it affects which vehicle gets sent.

Assistance dogs

Licensed taxi and private hire drivers in England are legally required to carry passengers with assistance dogs at no extra charge, unless the driver holds a medical exemption certificate displayed in the vehicle. It's still worth mentioning it when you book, so the driver isn't caught out and can plan for the extra space.

The railway station

Thirsk Racecourse

The racecourse itself has more built-in accessibility than most of the town:

• Reserved Blue Badge parking in both the Public and Premier car parks, with drop-off points at the Premier Entrance and the Grandstand Paddock & Picnic turnstiles.
• Ground-floor, level access throughout, with lifts in the Hambleton Stand and the Owners & Trainers building, and dedicated accessible toilets in both enclosures.
• A Personal Assistant scheme gives a carer complimentary admission alongside a racegoer who needs assistance — call the racecourse office on 01845 522276 to arrange it. Advance requests close 48 hours before an event, but you can still ask on the day.
