Taxi ranks in Thirsk

Thirsk has one working taxi rank, in the Market Place. It's reliable during the day and much less so early morning, late evening, or on quiet days — here's what to actually expect, rather than what a sign says.

The Market Place rank

Market Place, by Thirsk Clock

Central — a short walk from anywhere in the town centre

This is the rank most people mean when they say "get a taxi in Thirsk." It sits right by the clock in the Market Place, in the middle of town, and during the day it's usually got a car or two waiting.

Daytime: usually a car waiting Early / late: book ahead
  • Market days and race days bring more cars to the rank, but also more demand — don't assume daytime reliability holds on the busiest days.
  • Outside shopping hours — early morning, late evening, and quiet weekday spells — the rank can be empty. Phone one of the local firms instead of waiting on spec.
  • Claims that the rank runs a full 24/7 waiting service aren't consistent with what local sources report — treat "usually waiting during the day" as the safe assumption, not a round-the-clock guarantee.

Where there's no rank

Two places people expect a rank and won't find one:

  • Thirsk railway station — no rank, no cab office. See the railway station page for booking-ahead advice.
  • Outside the town centre generally — villages around Thirsk (Carlton Miniott, Sowerby, Sessay and similar) have no rank of their own; phone a firm that covers the area.
If you've ended up in Northallerton instead

Northallerton railway station has its own rank, run under a paid permit arrangement with a taxi management company rather than being a public council rank — useful to know if your journey routes you through there rather than Thirsk.

💡 Local Tip

If you're stood at the Market Place rank and it's empty, don't assume one's on its way — ranks here fill and empty on their own schedule, not a timetable. Ring a firm instead of waiting it out, especially after dark.
